For hundreds of years Capistrano Bay was a rugged natural anchorage offering shelter to passing mariners.  Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard-trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast (1840). In his journal, Dana documents his voyage from Boston to California on the merchant ship, Pilgrim. Dana describes the area previously known as Capistrano Bay, as “the most romantic spot in California.”

Now Dana Point is one of the largest recreational marina operations on the west coast and has become one of the most popular harbors in the world.  In its beautiful park-like setting Dana Point Harbor attracts thousands of visitors annually for shopping, dining and a host of recreational marine and landside activities and events.

Dana Point Harbor is also the gateway to Doheny State Park, one of California’s most popular beaches.
